| The multi purpose vessel Kriti Amethyst is seen in this photograph
as she was transiting downbound in the Welland Canal during the afternoon hours of November
11, 1987. At the time it was taken she was sailing northbound in the canal and was about
to enter Lake Ontario in Ontario, Canada. Construction of this ship was ordered in January of 1979 at the Gdanska Stoczina Shipyard in Poland. She was launched in February of 1982 and in November of that year she entered service as Kriti Amethyst. In the time since then she has sailed under these names and flags. (a) Kriti Amethyst (9/89) - Greece, (b) Ionian Express (9/98) - Vanuatu, (c) POL Iris (9/2000) - Vanuatu and when this photograph was added to the archives she was still operational as (d) Thor Merchant under the flag of Thailand.
