Additional details

During the early morning hours today an extremely violent storm system moved rapidly over the Niagara Penninsula and it brought havoc to cities along the south shore of Lake Ontario among others. At around 02:30 the lightning was lighting up the sky nearly continuously and at around 03:00 while the downbound cement carrier, Stephen B. Roman was being secured in lock 1 a bolt of lightning struck the fully raised bridge immediately south of the lock. The resulting electrical charge passed through the structure and apparently blew out the computer control system on the lock. Although Stephen B. Roman was lowered and permitted to leave the lock around 08:30, full operation of the lock was not regained until the early afternoon. As a result of the strike navigation along the canal was halted for several hours during the early morning.

ALGOWEST has been undergoing a complete hull re-painting over the past month. It seemed that the entire area surrounding the propeller was fully sandblasted however the majority of the hull was just spot sand blasted to remove small rust bubbles or chipping paint. The stern has now been completely repainted in the traditional Algoma blue but the most noticeable change is her port of registry. The familiar Sault Ste. Marie name has been replaced with St. Catharines. This is no doubt a reflection of the recent relocation of Algoma Central Corporation's Marine Division to St. Catharines, in the former Great Lakes Bulk Carriers office.

The APTMARINER which was passing upbound was about to enter lock 8 this morning at around 02:30 when engine troubles forced her to secure on the west approach wall below the lock. During the day repairs were affected and at around 16:30 she continued her upbound voyage and cleared the piers around 18:00.

The tall ships PLAYFAIR & PATHFINDER arrived at Port Weller harbour this morning around 07:30 and secured at the small boat dock adjacent to the Pilot boat wharf at 07:53. They remained there until traffic cleared out from the lock one shut down. They finally got underway around 14:00 and transitted upbound behind the Algosar. After passing through lock 8 and under bridge 21 they tied up at the West Street wharf (18.1) at 22:52 for the night.
